A Step by Step Guide to activating your SPOT account

Setting up your SPOT account and registering your new SPOT satellite messenger is a breeze.
There are just 4 sections to complete. Click here to go to registration page.

Once your account is created your messenger is ready to use!

A menu bar at the top of each registration page shows the current section that you are completing. It also shows any remaining sections that still need to be completed. At any time you can move back and forward to a previous completed section and make corrections. Use the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons to do this or click on the section link in the menu bar.

d

Fields marked with an asterix (*) mean that the field is required and you must provide the information in order for the section to be completed. Trying to move to the next section if mandatory fields are not entered causes the page to mark those fields with an ‘is required’ message.

d

Also, the information entered into each section is checked by the SPOT site for any obvious problems when the next, previous or update buttons are pressed. In the event that a problem is found, an error message will be displayed at the top of the page. If there is more than one problem, you will need to fix all of the problems before you can continue.

Step 1

Ok. Let’s step through the account creation process.

First enter your accountcontact information. Your name, address, email and 2 contact numbers. You must also provide your Citizenship. In the event of a life threatening emergency our 911 provider may need to contact the embassy in the region that you are traveling and will need your Citizenship information in order to do so.

The email address will be used as the primary mechanism for our customer care team to contact you regarding any account related issues. The primary and secondary contact phone numbers may also be used by our customer care team to contact you with account related issues.

In addition, all of the information provided in this section is passed to our 911 service provider in case of a life threatening event. They will first use the numbers provided here to contact you. If they are unsuccessful making contact they will then use the primary and secondary emergency contacts that you will setup in the message profile section.

d

Step 2

Next enter your new login information. Pick a user name, password and also select a security question & answer. The security question & answer will be required in the event that you need to reset your password.

Tips for creating a secure password:

  • Include punctuation marks and/or numbers.

  • Mix capital and lowercase letters.

  • Include similar looking substitutions, such as the number zero for the letter 'O' or '$' for the letter 'S'.

  • Create a unique acronym.

  • Include phonetic replacements, such as 'Luv 2 Laf' for 'Love to Laugh'.

Step 3

Next we need to know which service options you want to activate for your new messenger.

The unlimited SPOT Basic Service includes the following services :

  • ALERT 9-1-1: Dispatch emergency responders to your exact location. Unlimited usage included.

  • CHECK IN: Let contacts know where you are and that you’re okay. Unlimited usage included.

  • ASK FOR HELP: Request help from friends and family at your exact location. Unlimited usage included.

The unlimited Tracking Service allows you to:

·        Save and review your progress, or allow anyone with access to your account information to log on and view your route, complete with virtual views provided by Google Maps™. Tracking service, also known as SPOTcasting™ acquires and sends your GPS coordinates to your SPOT account every 10 minutes for up to 24 hours or until cancelled.

Note above prices may change without notice.

Step 4

Next enter your credit card information. The login.findmespot.com website pages are encrypted with high-grade 128 bit encryption before being transmitted over the internet. Encryption makes it very difficult for unauthorized people to view this information as it passes over the internet.

d

If the billing address assigned to your credit card is different from the address you have provided as part of your customer information select the option and then enter the correct billing address. (* the billing address is only used for billing purposes and will *not* be sent to our 911 service provider.)

d

You also need to agree to the Spot Inc. terms of service. A copy is also posted here.

d

Step 5

Next you need to provide information about your new SPOT messenger. It’s best to have this information handy before you get to this point. The Serial Number and Authentication Code that goes with it can be found inside the battery compartment of your messenger. The SPOT website will check this information when the next button is clicked. If there is a problem you will need to check that you entered the correct serial number and/or authentication code.

d

Step 6

That leaves just one last section to complete before you are ready to verify the information you entered and create your account. Each SPOT messenger requires a message profile to be assigned to it. This is your link to friends and family who will receive notifications via email or SMS when you use your SPOT messenger.

Check-in

Use this feature to let your SPOTteam know that all is well, notify them of your location or save waypoints so that you can review your route at a later date.

Ask For Help

Use this option in the event of a non-life-threatening situation to notify your SPOTteam - the friends and family you have chosen to notify - that you need assistance.

For each of these you can add up to 10 emails or sms contacts or a combination of the two. Click the ‘add an email address’ or ‘add a mobile device’ to add your contacts.

d

To enter a mobile device that will receive notifications, enter the phone number and then select the correct wireless carrier. Click the OK button and the website will setup the correct email address used by that wireless carrier for receiving text messages.

We include many of the larger wireless carriers for US and Canada (and will continue to add more carriers in the future). However, if the wireless carrier does not appear in the list, you can enter the information manually by selecting the –NOT-LISTED- option from the list. Then enter the full email address (and not just the phone number) for your phone into the phone number section. (Your wireless carrier should be able to provide this information if you do not know it already).

The SPOT service notifications sent to an email address contain an additional google map link that allows friends and family to click the link and show your location on a map. Since SMS messages for many carriers are restricted in length, messages sent to a mobile device (SMS) do not include the google maps link.

d

Step 7

Recently we enhanced the message profile section. You can now provide additional operator information for any messenger in your account by setting the operator information under the Alert 9-1-1 section of the message profile. By default, the account owner information is sent to the 911 service provider. However, in cases where you may have a number of different messengers in your account, you can now override this by setting specific operator information. For example, you may have 2 messengers, one that you use regularly and one that your spouse uses. If so, use the operator section to set your spouse’s information. Simply select the tick box and enter their details. You must also provide contact information for them.

d

We require that you setup 2 emergency contacts for each profile. We also require that these contacts be different and that they be different from the person who is operating the messenger. Our 911 provider will first try to make contact using the account numbers that you have provided or if you set the operator contact information that will be used instead. If they are unsuccessful they will then try to make contact with your primary and/or secondary emergency contacts. In addition, if there is anything else that you would like the 911 service provider to know about you (or the operator), that information can be provided in an optional field.

d

Step 8

Once you are done entering your message profile information, hitting the ‘next’ button takes you to the confirmation page. Double check all of your information and make corrections if necessary. Also review the service charges that are displayed. When you are happy with everything be sure to click the ‘Finish’ button. Your account and charges to your credit card will only be finalized after you have clicked the ‘Finish’ button. If there are any problems at this point, the website will display an error. If you continue to have problems please contact SPOT customer care who will be happy to help you with any registration problems.

d

Step 9

Congratulations! You are now ready to start using your SPOT messenger. You will be re-directed to the Welcome page. Use the login section at the top of the page to enter your new user id and password. Hit the login button to access your account.
